Mail Pouch Tobacco: Uncovering the Secrets of the White Whale

With decades of photos tucked away for someday, as I previously mentioned, on occasion I have a little difficulty remembering where I might have snapped a photo of something. Generally speaking, I have fairly good recall. But every once in a while something just escapes me. My recollection is dim, and the basic details that I do possess just can’t help me locate where a picture was taken.

When it comes to barns, particularly of the Mail Pouch persuasion, you might think it that if you’ve seen one red or black Mail Pouch barn, that over time, they all just kind of blend together. Strangely, that hasn’t been my experience for the most part. There is often some peripheral detail that provides a touchstone for it’s location.

However, this is where we come to “for the most part.” I did have one visited Mail Pouch barn whose actual location eluded me for a pretty long time. Years, in fact. This particular case surprises me because it bears one fairly large and uncommon characteristic – the barn is white. It was a white Mail Pouch barn. There aren’t very many of those around.

What I knew for sure was that I’d seen it in Pennsylvania. Maybe somewhere close to Pittsburgh? Other than that, I had nothing. While poking around on the mailpouchbarnstormers.org website last weekend, I found it!

Say hello to the white Mail Pouch Tobacco barn of Jeannette, Pennsylvania.

It’s cases like this when I love the internet the most. The fact that there are a bunch of weirdos out there who love what you love and provide enough details for you to get get out there and see it yourself? Beautiful.

Did you ever find the Mail Pouch barn just south of Richfield Springs, NY? It’s on County Route 22 on the east side of Canadarago Lake.

I haven’t, yet. I do have a pin for it on my map for years now, probably from when you first told me about it 🙂 Hopefully i’ll get up around that way one of these days.

Hope all is well with you~
