A Strange Encounter on Route 6 in Ohio

A Strange Encounter on Route 6 in Ohio

While riding through a fairly residential section of Route 6 in Ohio, as I approached the intersection of a side street, a big silvery fish fell out of the sky. Thick and long, it’s 18 inches met the pavement with an unceremonious, vaguely moist sounding splat. It was a sound that transcended the noise filtering of my earplugs. If you’ve never heard a big fat fish shake hands with the ground from 40 feet up well, let me tell you – it’s surprisingly loud.

My guess is that a mighty big bird must’ve be working pretty hard to carry its feast to high ground. It’s straining claws just couldn’t hang on anymore and it let the fish go. Or… you know, aliens.

The whole episode reminded me of my pancake encounter. Life is mysterious.

My mom calls me Ray 🙂 Somewhere along Route 6 in Ohio.

Lorain Lighthouse – Banana at East Beach

Lorain Lighthouse – Banana at East Beach

With my belly grumbling, I decided to stop for a spell at Lakeview Park along Lake Erie to eat my electric banana. I didn’t know anything about the park, I just happened to see that it had a waterview.

Though my morning ride was just little over a hundred miles since leaving Napoleon, Ohio where I’d spent the night, with everything I’d seen so far, it felt like I’d already been riding for a long time. The park was a perfect place to take a breather.

After parking myself on the steps I looked out to the infinite horizon, marveling at the size of the lake. I was pleasantly surprised to find a lighthouse bracing against the wind off to the east.

Napoleon Fruit Soup, A Ghost Ad and Morning on a Motorcycle

Napoleon Fruit Soup, A Ghost Ad and Morning on a Motorcycle

When I left my hotel in Napoleon, Ohio headed east towards home I didn’t really have much of a plan other than go towards where the sun was coming up. I picked up US 6 because it was familiar. Actually, I could follow it almost all the way home if I’d wanted to.

With a quick u-turn to get a better look at a ghost ad I spotted in an alley, I parked on the main drag in Napoleon. A Gold Medal Flour and 7-Up two-fer!

While there, some creeps watched me take pictures.

Before riding away, I pulled up a listing of Roadside America favorites on my GPS to see if there was anything interesting nearby. Huh, a giant can of soup

And so it was I found myself on the side of the road watching a huge can of tomato soup basking in a glorious sunrise. Life is nothing if not mysterious.

Since a tomato is technically a fruit, the big soup can seemed perfect for today:

Whispering Giants Motorcycle Grand Tour: Northeastern Round-up, So Far

Whispering Giants Motorcycle Grand Tour: Northeastern Round-up, So Far

While I was wandering through Pennsylvania in July, I was able to stop and visit some Whispering Giants for the Grand Tour. Though bummed to find the Giant in Williamsport, Pa. had been removed I did strike gold in Akron, Oh., Dunkirk, Ny., and Sharon, Pa.

Sharon, Pa.:

Unfortunately, the Sharon giant has a significant amount of rot. There has already been extensive repair work to keep him standing.

The whole underside of his nostrils is rotted out and you can see a gap in the tooth area as well. Hang in there, buddy. 🙁

Dunkirk, Ny:

Rotaynah – Akron, Oh:

Of this Giants that I’ve seen so far, Rotaynah has made the biggest impression on me. He’s been my favorite.

He’s huge and has a very striking appearance. There has been some repair work on him, so I hope that helps his longevity.

Wouldn’t you know it? Hammy’s Titan Quest Rally in August used Whispering Giants as bonus locations. During the rally I visited 3 more Giants: Maryland, Delaware and Virginia.

Chief Little Owl – Bethany Beach, De:

Some of the Giants that I’ve previously posted about:

Enisketomp in Plymouth, Ma:

This was by far the tallest of the Giants that I’ve visited. I loved his long braids. Read more about my Enisketomp visit.

Omiskanoagwiak – Springfield, Ma:

My very first stop on the Grand Tour.

This brings up my total Whispering Giants visited for the Grand Tour to 9. That’s already better than I thought I would do. I’ve got 2 more that I would like to see (Vermont and New Hampshire) before the Grand Tour ends. I hope I can make it!
