If This is Tonalea, Those Must Be Elephant’s Feet

While riding in Arizona, there were several times in which I had to stop myself from looking too closely on Google Maps street view at any area I would be passing through. There is a balance to be struck between being prepared and knowing too much.

Looking too closely can remove some of the wonderful surprise of encountering the unexpected. File under: Elephant’s Feet

While heading toward Monument Valley, these huge rock formations appeared along my route on Highway 160 in the Navajo Nation area of Tonalea, Arizona.

When I saw their ankles rising up from the side of the road I let out an audible “Oh my god!”

Another excellent post and fantastic photos! I live in Arizona but haven’ made a ride yet to Monument Valley, but it’s on my bucket list of rides. I’ve lived in Arizona 45 years and have not heard of Elephant Feet, so I’ll add that to my list. I did ride through the so called Elephant Curve one time on Yarnell Hill (a stretch of Arizona 89), but of course that’s nothing impressive.
