Bucket List: Riding the Moki Dugway

While riding in Utah in the fall of ’23, seeing the Moki Dugway was a must-do. The unpaved pass was something on my bucket list for what must’ve been over a decade. I first learned about it through photos online. Since then, I just knew that one day I would have to see the serpentine switchbacks wriggling through the mountains while the Valley of the Gods spilled out below with my own eyes. There are just some things that must be experienced firsthand.

The three mile climb to the top is unpaved. But I found it easily suitable for a street bike and tires while there. The surface was hard packed. As a matter of fact on my way up, some dude on a full-dress Harley was coming down with the radio on.

There was a lot of washboard but nothing problematic in warm, dry conditions. What I found most emotionally challenging was the 10% steep grades on the climb up and the drop offs. It was a thrilling ride.

I would love to go back and do it again but this time make more stops for photos!

Thanks for sharing. My daughter and family live in Boulder, CO, and they are always talking about the scenic drives, including Utah. I visited last July, and we drove their Tesla up Pikes Peak in Autonomous (hands free) Mode. Utah is on the list. Bob B
