The Dollar General Dragon – Caryville, Tennessee

If you’re traveling along I-75 out of Knoxville, about 35 miles north of the city in the town of Caryville, Tennessee a curious sight comes into view. Nestled in a kudzu nest behind a Dollar General store is a giant green dragon.

The 40-foot beast is a beloved local icon created by artist Jim Cole in the 1980’s as a fireworks store mascot and attention grabber. Thunder Mountain Fireworks burned down in the 2000’s but the dragon remained. In 2022, it underwent a bit of a spa day to keep it looking sharp. Hopefully he’ll continue to wave at the traffic for years to come.

Love this guy!
