Pennsylvania’s Lincoln Highway Heritage Corridor – Murals

While road tripping is made up in part of sheer serendipity; discovering things while you float free and unfettered in the world, the other part of that equation is seeing something which you’d previously learned about with your own eyes.

If you’ve read this blog before, you may have seen references to my Google Map on which I have hundred (thousands?) of things pinned. The pins not only mark places and things to see, they mark potential for the future. Like little magnets, they push and pull me to different places I might not have gone otherwise.

Looking across the state of Pennsylvania on my map, there is a long string of stars which pinpoint stops along Route 30, the Lincoln Highway. A group of those markers is a series of murals stewarded by the Lincoln Highway Heritage Corridor, whose mission is stated as

To inspire others to travel the 200-mile Lincoln Highway in Pennsylvania, and learn how this one road changed America in 1913.

The Lincoln Highway, particularly in Pennsylvania has captured my attention for many years now. I love stopping to see the sights. With that, here are a few of the murals that I’ve visited along the way.

Greensburg

As you might imagine, the Greensburg Lincoln Highway has a little special kick for me with its motorcycle connection. Though I love the motoring, petroliana, and travel themes in general, seeing a period motorcycle is a little extra special.

Latrobe

You’ll find this postcard-style mural on the back of the building at the Lincoln Highway Experience in Latrobe. Additionally, you can see the Roadside Giant gas pump here. I’ve yet to stop in when the Experience was open. One of these days!

Schellsburg

In additional to being just generally wonderful, this multi-sided barn mural project has the unique distinction of being on a buffalo ranch.

Stoyestown

This mural in Stoyestown, on the Old Lincoln Highway in one of my favorites that I’ve seen so far. The connection to travel, motoring, petroliana hits me right in the feels.

The first couple of times that I visited, there was a Lincoln Highway Pump ParadeYou’ve Got a Friend in Pennsylvania” gas pump on display. It was no longer around in 2024, but I’m not sure when it was removed from display.

Stoyestown

I’ve zipped by it a few times but I’ve only ever stopped for a look when on my motorcycle. There isn’t a lot of space to pull off with a car on the shoulder. And if you aren’t looking for it specifically, I’ve found it easy to cruise right by only acknowledging it once it was too late to stop.

Not Yet Photographed

Although I’ve passed through some of these towns and even saw the mural while going by, I have yet to stop and photograph them. The nice part about that is that it gives me something to do in the future. One day, I’ll have visited them all.
