Ghost Sign: Day & Night Tobacco – Lancaster, Pa.

day & night tobacco ghost sign on a brick house on seymour street in lancaster, pennsylvania

A pin for this location on Seymour Street in Lancaster, Pa. has been on my Google map for a few years now. I’m not sure how I became aware of this ghost sign. Day & Night Tobacco is not a brand or name I am familiar with.

I tried to do a general search to see if there were older photos of this sign that might help to uncover what the layers are. It looks like there might’ve been a Coca-Cola visible at some time. You can kind of make out that second swoopy “C” where the double C’s in tobacco are. The yellow lettering underneath “Day &” has me curious, but I can’t quite make it out. The very top looks like “Genuine” which was commonly used with Bull Durham Tobacco, but it’s a mystery.

As far as I can piece together from looking at old advertising online, Day & Night Tobacco was made by the Pinkerton Tobacco Company. Information seems to be pretty scarce.
