Honk if you love roadside attractions!

My surprise encounter with the Mother Goose House in Hazard, Kentucky further supports my opinion that America has the greatest roadside attractions in the world!

Often people ask me how I find funky stuff while out on the road. One of my favorite ways is by chance. That’s how I came upon this big goose.

While satisfying an itch by navigating to something has its own reward, seeing something unexpectedly adds to it the delicious element of surprise.

In October of 2018, I rode through the town of Hazard, Kentucky after stopping in Dwarf.

Hazard was one of those town names I’d often seen on a map and thought, I should pass through there. No doubt this inclination was fueled by my childhood crush on John Schneider as Bo Duke on the Dukes of Hazzard. (Don’t judge me!)

After having a satisfying look-see around the town, I continued east headed for points unknown.

Serendipity strikes again!

On my way out of town, I suddenly found myself looking at a giant goose-shaped building on the side of the road. I couldn’t believe my luck!

Hailing from the land of the beloved Big Duck, seeing this big goose was near and dear to my heart!

Once solely a private home, as of 2020 the goose-shaped building has opened for tours.

In addition to tours, Roadside Americana lovers can now spend the night in the nest. Mother Goose is officially an inn. Can you imagine spending the night in the belly of this beast?

Keep exploring, my friends.

A goose! Love it. Yes, the best encounters are those that come by surprise.

When I had my bike I would go out exploring but I had to have at least a vague destination in mind even if I didn’t make it there. Then I would play where does that road go and usually found something awesome, even if it was just an old barn.
