Hanging on for Spring

On Saturday night, I went out to the garage, sat on my motorcycle and took a picture. The temperature hovered in a single digit. It’s hard to remain upbeat when you go outside and it hurts to breathe in. But… I’m trying.

We’re officially in the middle of February. By the time this work week is over, we’ll be closer to March than January and thereby just that much closer to spring.

I remember last year somewhere around this time my friend Rosie saying to take a closer look at the trees – the buds for their leaves were already there. At first I thought, no way, it’s too early! But sure enough, they are there just waiting to bust out some leafy moves. It won’t be long.

Just gotta hang on a little longer.

Mid February is deepest winter here. We were almost at -30C over the weekend. On March 30 I am hoping to be able to ride my bike to our new home in Toronto. I’m going to start crossing my fingers and praying to the weather gods in a few weeks’ time.

Thanks David, you made the point I was going to bring up..
If you want to meet an avid rider, just talk to one with a shorter riding season than your own.

I travel for work all over the US, and every year I’ll see dozens of bikes out when it’s 50 degrees here in my home area of WI/IL, and I’ll travel to Georgia or Louisiana in 70 degree temps and rarely see more than 1 or 2 bikes out.

This week I’m helping my cabin fever and bike needs by flying down to Birmingham and visiting the Barber Motorsports Museum. Several hundred bikes on display and some good ol’ fashioned BBQ should help get me by until the spring rains arrive at home and wash the roads of their current white salt layer.

I’ve also picked up a non-running 1980 BMW R65 to work on and bring back to life. It was the bike of a woman who would ride with her husband, but when he passed away almost 2 decades ago the bike was parked and never ridden again. Luckily it was parked in a good environment and just needs to be re-lubed throughout. I have no need for the bike, other than therapy against the winter.

Summer is coming! Slowly…and painfully…but it IS coming! 🙂

Wow you remember that?? Most of us associate nature’s blooming with Spring since that’s when we start “seeing” most of it, but some of nature’s work starts well before that shortly after the Winter solstice begins. Pretty exciting to know that this early on things are already starting to happen. So even though Winter has a bad rap since it limits riding, it’s a great time to look inward and refresh ourselves and look forward to the new-ness of earth all over again.

BTW: In that photo you look like you just got busted attempting to steal a motorcycle. Lol!! 🙂

Spring will be here soon. I keep telling myself that. I’m trying hard to ignore the weather forecast, hoping that by doing so, another big snowstorm will not happen. My annual girlfriend getaway is happening next week. I NEED that. Bad.
