PA Ramble Roadtrip: Heading to Williamsport

On Tuesday after work, I set off for Pennsylvania in hopes of beating the nasty weather that was on the way. Plus with the approaching long weekend, I wanted to maximize my available riding time. Why not set off from somewhere closer to the start of the loop that I wanted to ride?

Leaving Long Island proved particularly hellacious. With construction closing a lane on both decks of the George Washington Bridge, traffic snarled to a crawl when it moved at all. The traffic sign noted it would take 80 minutes to travel the 8 miles along the Cross Bronx to the GWB.

As the heat began to rise and beads of sweat trickled down my back, I tried to stay cool, stay positive. The bridge was just.. right.. over there… and on the other side was RIDING! Escaping NY Metro is its own special brand of torture.

By the time I reached the Delaware Water Gap on route I-80, a ferocious sky had opened and poured buckets of water on me. I don’t recall ever having experienced rain so hard before. The sky got so dark that I felt unnerved, almost scared by it. Thankfully, it didn’t last long. With clearing skies, I rode the last hour or so in the dry.

My goal was to make it to Williamsport, where there was a Whispering Giant. Then it would be a quick run to the start of one leg of that State College Shamrock Tour I had eyed up.

When I pulled under the hotel canopy to get a room, the sky darkened and began to drizzle. The girls at the desk said “leave your motorcycle under there, it’s going to get bad out.” In my experience, it’s hit or miss if a hotel will let you leave your bike up front so I was more than happy to do so.

Fifteen minutes later…

While I tucked safely in to a beer and a burger in the bar, the rain came down in sheets.

I was happy to be inside thinking about riding the following day.

Wait a minute… Not a rally?… No inflexible schedule?… Enjoying an evening beer and burger at a bar?…

Watch out, Fuzz, this go-at-your-own-pace, answer-only-to-your-whims type of riding just might become a habit. 😉
