Fatbike on Long Island: Flax Pond and Crane Neck

The north shore of Long Island is gently lapped by the Long Island Sound. The beaches are mostly rocky because we don’t have big waves pummeling everything into sand.

I rode my bike out from West Meadow Beach along Crane Neck to Flax Pond. The tide was high so there were long stretches where it was like riding on marbles. I’m not proud to say that I had to walk quite a few times. But, I was still able to make good time to a part of the island that I’d never seen before.

Oh, hello gigantic boulder. Don’t see too many like you ’round here.

You never know what you’re going to find out there in the world. The last thing I ever imagined was a bouy tree 🙂

On the return back to the beach parking lot I stopped near the big boulder again.

For the first time in the 13 years I’ve lived here on Long Island I saw a seal bobbing around in the sound. That made the whole ride worth it.
