The Sunday Ride That Wasn’t

As I cruised into day 24 of the BEDN (blog everyday in November) Challenge, my brain flickered out like an old bulb. You see, I didn’t ride a motorcycle at all today. c-c-cold
That in and of itself isn’t all that weird. I don’t ride every day of my life. But, there is something about Sunday that always tugs at my riding heartstrings. The Sunday Ride – It’s an institution.

If Wikipedia is to be believed, the Sunday Ride née Drive has been around for nearly 100 years.

The use of the automobile for the Sunday drive began in the 1920s and 1930s. The idea was that the automobile was not used for commuting or errands, but for pleasure. There would be no rush to reach any particular destination.

That sounds like my kind of Sunday.

Instead of a ride to nowhere, my morning started with a cold and windy 5K foot race at 9am. The wind was howling and the temperature held steady at 26 degrees. For the rest of the day I felt cold and chilled through. After a few more errands, I sat down on the couch at about 1:30 and… took a nap.

That’s it. No ride.

Even though I have heated gear I just couldn’t bring myself to go back outside, let alone go for a ride. I guess it was just one of those days.

Did you get out for a ride today? Where’d you go?

Leave me a link to your blogpost if you’ve got one.

Today it was about 68 degrees and sunny so I went for a ride to Costco and the grocery store but I took the long way to get there. That means I rode along the ocean for about 5 miles and then I turned inland to the coastal mountain range and a redwood forest. In other words, I took the 35 mile route to a store that is about 2 1/2 miles from my house 😉 I love Sunday rides but I try to act like I’m running errands…

Thank for your daily posting this month. I am enjoying the entries very much!

Just to church then around the university before heading back home. It was about +4F but only rode about 15 miles.

Had a great ride around N Devon, in the SW of England, competing in the Neil Westcott memorial trial, a long distance or classic trial, only about 70miles or so but with 15 observed “Sections” that must be ridden feet up, and a route that gets sent to you before the event and must be followed. Started out at -2’C, but a glorious day in some lovely scenery, getting to ride tracks and lanes that are usually prohibited.

Rode Saturday, but not Sunday. Spent Sunday down on the Cruiser Olympia in Philly volunteering.

Okay… now this is just showing off. 🙂 You get up early on a Sunday, brave the cold, run a long distance and then say you didn’t ALSO ride your motorcycle. Most of us were merely drinking coffee on the couch while you were out there being Superwoman. There are limits even for superheroes like you.

120 mile round trip on my Vespa150 to Windley Key Fossil Reef Geological State Park. I managed to annoy several Miami bound SUVs by passing them on my “moped” where they least expected it. Today it’s cold (under 80 degrees) and very windy so I could ride the Bonneville to work, or take the Vespa and battle the elements. No brainier especially as rain threatens the Keys all week.

I’m with you, Fuzz. After a couple-mile dog walk in the morning when it was 12F I spent a good deal of the morning trying to feel warm again, and with a high of 30F and 20 mph winds it was just a no-go. It’s not fun if it’s not fun, you know?

  9. While I didn’t get out for a ride this Sunday, I did a few Sunday’s ago (and I blogged about it :)). I like to get out whenever I can, but with 5 kids, a full-time job, and a house to take care of…my riding usually gets put on the backburner for more important things…like dishes, laundry, and playing taxi for my kids. When I get out I do love to take the scenic route, though. On this particular Sunday I rode through part of the San Bernardino National Forest. It was absolutely breathtaking!! There is nothing so under-rated as a good nap. Not a bad way to spend a cold afternoon imo.

Oh forgot, congrats on the 5K! How did it go?

I hadn’t planned on running this particular 5K until my friend msgd me on friday night. And – I was my typical right up the middle self. I’m on the pokey side when it comes to running. I can’t seem to crack the sub-30 minute 5K. But, in truth i’m not really doing any speed work.

I’m just happy to be out there 🙂

Woke up to 25 F* and clear skies and couldn’t wait till it got warm enough to get out! I’m a bit of a weenie when it comes to cold weather so when I did go I had numerous layers and the heated hand grips on. I enjoy Sunday rides – or any other day I can get out for some wind therapy.

  13. I did get out and ride on Sunday but it was cold — hence the name of my blog post. Slowly I’m girding myself for the coming of winter.

[…] In many places it’s too cold to ride. Some of us are still toughing it out, at least as often as we can. Truth be told while there’s still plenty of riding to be had across North America (and yes, […]
