A Postcard from a Cold Day In Hell

The view from my morning commute – me, as a pillion:

Passenger on the way to work

It must be freezing in hell today! 😉

In a bid to save fuel, Kenny was kind enough to give me a lift to the office since he was riding to work anyway. Bike-pooling! It was the first time I’ve gone in to the office for over a week. Thankfully I have the luxury of leniency in the workplace.

I am a terrible passenger but I feel like I did pretty good back there. I managed to only bonk his helmet twice with my open visor, so you could say I’ve made progress. 🙂

Here on Long Island people are frustrated by the gas situation but… things aren’t normal. Hurricane Sandy kicked our asses. Even so it seems that many don’t feel that they should have to sacrifice a little comfort and maybe not drive to the mall today.

There is some craziness going on here. Lines at the pump have been hours long when a station with gasoline is found. With tempers flaring people are pulling knives, fights are breaking out when someone tries to jump the line. It’s ridiculous.

People are hoarding fuel when they find a station that is pumping. And yet I saw many drivers doing 80mph down the Expressway in their SUVs this morning. I don’t want to be inconvenienced! Boo- f’n-hoo. Calm down and conserve a little.

[/rant]

But, even as I type this – things are getting better as far as fuel availability goes. Just in time for the nor-easter on it’s way tomorrow. ::sigh::

Hope things are good in your part of the world.

  1. Ah those long lines, will not miss them.

These people don’t get it. They still think everything will be okay anytime now. In truth, it probably will be. BUT, let’s say something else happens (like the nor’easter you’re expecting) that prevents more fuel supply for another ‘couple of weeks. I bet people will start regretting not being a little gentler on the gas pedal.

IMO, this storm is a perfect example of how people fail to prepare and are too dependent.

I think it’s GREAT that you carpooled on a motorcycle!! I already commute by motorcycle every day, rain or shine. I love it… 45 mpg, versus 12 mpg in my truck (diesel at that).

I think the culture here in NY Metro suburbia is different than in other places around the country where goods and services may not be as readily available. There is this idea that we don’t need to be self sufficient because everything we want is right around the corner, 10 times over. Until it isn’t.

Good for you Fuzzy! I am not that great of a passenger anymore since learning how to ride. Hub tells me I am trying to drive the bike from back there – lol. Its way more comfy up front too, a little more leg and back room.

Hope the Nor’Easter doesn’t cause too much havoc and that things get better in your area.

Thanks, Dar- We’re hoping for the best here. So many people are still working through issues from Sandy. It’s just terrible.

I’m thinking part of my issues with being a passenger have to do with me being a rider, too. I know when I would brake, would start my turn, my personal safe following distance – so when someone deviates from what would be my norm – it’s like impending doom.

I don’t know what it would take to convince folks that they need to conserve. Good for you for bike-pooling!

So you bike of choice during the apocalypse? Ural of Tiger? Ural can hold a lot but your not out running anyone in it.

    • Fuzzygalore says:

Hmm. The Ural doesn’t get good gas mileage, but that can be offset by being able to bring more gas. I can also help other people with it, and carry stuff. I can still do 50mph, can deal with any type of weather including ice & snow.

      I’m thinking Ural.

You’re probably a much better passenger than I am. I’m a hooligan in the front seat and a total chicken shit on the rear.

  7. Pam says:

Bonking helmets! Glad you’re keeping your sense of humor in the midst of that mess it is a true sign of character.

  8. Trobairitz says:

Only bonking helmets twice is doing well. When I am pillion I only ever bonk them when the visor is up or if hubby has to emergency brake and I can’t hold myself back.

I am not a good pillion rider after riding my own ride. I think you hit the nail on the head when you said that we know where we’d brake, or start a turn, etc. And I find lean angles feel sharper when on the back.

Great job commuting together too. There would be more gas to go around if everyone was so thoughtful about conserving.

We’ve got the Senas and I like them, too. But I don’t think the music is loud enough. We don’t have a stereo transmitter. Maybe that would help? I haven’t tried pairing with my piece-o-crap stupid phone, but perhaps when I get an iPhone I’ll give it a try.
