GoPro Accidental Photos: The Redwoods

While in California, Kenny and I spent a lot of time with out GoPro cameras set to photo mode. We varied the photo shooting time between 1 and 3 second intervals. Overall, I found that I much prefer having a lot of photos to sift through, rather than hours of yawn-worthy video.

What I also discovered is that invariably there will be some gems that get taken “by accident”. They seem to pop up often when you forget to turn the camera off while stopped somewhere.

While looking through our GoPro photos I found this photo that was taken in the Humboldt Redwoods:
Fuzzy in the Humboldt Redwoods

If you click to enlarge it, you’ll see that I am in the lower right corner taking a photo with my camera. It gives you some idea of what it’s like to be amongst those big beautiful trees. Pretty cool, huh?

How About You?

Do you ever use your GoPro in photo mode?

    Thats an awesome photo Fuzzy.

I actually put mine on photo mode (1 second) this morning for the ride to work….I had it mounted on the bars today, so I’m looking forward to seeing what I shot when I get home.

I did a 200km ride a few weeks ago and “thought” I had it on photo mode…but it was on single shot mode instead and unfortunately all I got was 4 boring photos – taken each time I pressed the button to stop shooting sections of the trip, which was a shame as a group from the Nomads MC went past me and it would have been good to capture that – especially when the Highway Patrol went off after them!

      Thanks!
You’re definitely going to have a whole mess of photos to look through 🙂 I can’t wait to see what you come up with.

Do you find editing the video you capture a daunting task?

I don’t have the skills to put something cool together with the footage we capture on vid – so the photos do a good job of helping me remember my story as it unfolded in a way that is similar to video, but much more user friendly for me. I really like that aspect.

I don’t like the process of importing the clips into iMovie – I just let the computer do that while I’m off doing something else!….but I really enjoy editing videos and putting together something cool that captures the best moments of a ride, then search for the perfect music to go with it.

I gtry and cut the footage down as much as I can, particularly if I’m showing other people….I might enjoy looking at 20 minutes of me riding but others don’t 🙂 so I try and make most movies 3-4 minutes.

But it will be good to see what I get from today. The battery ran out part of the way, but I managed to get the camera to turn on and its displaying 999 so there’s at least that many shots on there…..

Marvelous photo. Holy mackerel I never knew how big those trees are!

I’ve used my GoPro in only video mode but I understand the “hours of yawn-worthy video”. Next time I’m out I’ll have to use that mode.

    Fuzzy

What a gorgeous picture. We have a GoPro, but haven’t done much with it. I think next ride I will have to stick it to my helmet.

I know exactly what you mean about yawn worthy video. Especially on a street ride I find nothing is really that exciting when watching a video. Even a lot of track video get’s boring unless there is a bunch of passing etc. Most video is good to watch just if your trying to improve your skills.

However for dirt I think video is the greatest thing out there! There is always great video when a dirt ride is involved!!

I’ll have to try the picture mode out.

I think the reality is – that there is a lot of editing required to make a video great. That is definitely a skill or talent that I know I don’t have. It makes you really appreciate the vision that some people have when you see a vid that is well done.

I don’t have a GoPro, but what a cool photo! Great subject too, and what a fun way to capture the scene!
