A Ride Along Long Island’s North Shore

Long Island’s north shore has some lovely little towns tucked into the coves along the Sound shoreline. This is where you can find some sense of “small town” feel that is increasingly absent in the bustling suburbia that makes up so much of the island.

I took the DRZ and my iPhone along to snap some photos as I passed through Northport, Centerport, Huntington and Cold Spring Harbor.

Northport Main Street

Northport has a waterfront park, a gorgeous olde tyme luncheonette and easily stroll-able streets. Main Street clings to it’s Americana like a badge of honor.  While I do love modern things – I find something comforting in places that appreciate their own history.

Just a hop skip and a jump over to the next cove is Centerport. We sometimes stop here to grab a bite to eat at the Shack.

One of the town’s most notable residents was of course motorsport enthusiast William K. Vanderbilt II. His home, Eagle’s Nest is now a museum and planetarium.

On my ride, I stopped and sat by the water for a few minutes near the Mill Dam bridge. I saw a group of swans take off from the water. I don’t know why, but I can’t recall ever seeing swans actually flying before. They always just seem to be floating in the water.  Was it a double-rainbow moment? What did it mean?

Cross in Centerport

At a church on the Centerport Harbor stands a statue of Mary.  She looks like she’s coming out of a pool or ready to dismount off of some gymnastics equipment. I hope she sticks the landing.

I stopped for a quick picture at Coindre Hall in Huntington. I think it’s such a beautiful building. That said, I can’t imagine ever feeling at home living in something that looks like a library. Can you?

I didn’t venture all that much further west. Cold Spring Harbor was kind of my end point before heading back east. It just felt so great to be out on two wheels.

How do you know when it’s time to turn around when you don’t know where you’re going?

Do you know if they still allow dogs off leash at Coindre? I used to take my doggy there when he was a pup. He used to tear down to the water to chase the ducks as soon as we got out of the car. Damn, I miss that guy…

What’s the roll chart for? Are you gearing up for an Iron Butt attempt with me?

      Hey! 🙂
I don’t think its legal to have a dog off leash but I don’t know if they do any kind of real enforcement. I know being without your pup must be terrible. 🙁 I’m really sorry.

My rollchart is still on there from my last dirt ride. I never bothered to take it off 😆

Walking dogs at Coindre became terribly controversial a year or two ago and several people complained about unleashed dogs so the local police started handing out summonses. It became an ugly situation.

Nice to see you in my part of the world. Your photos are always exceptional.

Agree with others, the photos are wonderful. Are they from the Iphone, and did you post process them? The colors are very vibrant. Looks like a pleasant ride. 🙂

      Thanks, Trobairitz & Kari!

Yes, they are from the iPhone. They were taken with the regular camera and then run through Dynamic Light, which is an HDR app.

Not too bad for a “telephone”!

I enjoy city life, but I do appreciate a break from all the hustle and bustle… Looks like you had a great time here, and the pictures really do look fantastic! If you got them from the iphone, wow! definitely great quality!

OMG, I LOVE the picture of the tree and the DRZ, especially the reflections of the sky in the mirrors. All of the shots are good ones. I could almost feel the serenity you must have experienced during your ride.

As to knowing when to turn around… I don’t know how to answer. It’s almost as if you get to a point where you are finally fully relaxed, loving life again, and ready to go back to the madness that is everyday life. Thanks for sharing so I could live vicariously through you. 🙂

Are they tram lines in Northport’s Main Street, Fuzz?
Some interesting shots from your day out indeed!
