Washing My REV’IT Sand Textile Motorcycle Pants

By the time Kenny and I got home from our New Years day loop around Manhattan, we were covered in a manky layer of road filth. With temperatures rising to the upper 40’s in the morning, there was a serious melt happening around New York City. Our gear was covered in funky gray water stains, salt and dirt that sprayed up from the roadways.

My Dirty REVIT Sand Pants

One Giant Leap for Mankind

Now, you might say that buying light colored textile motorcycle gear isn’t exactly the best choice for looking clean all the time. But, you know? I just don’t care. I love the color scheme of my REV’IT Sand gear.

When I first got my fancy get-up, someone said that I looked like an astronaut. I don’t know why but I kind of love that. Do they make a NASA-themed helmet?

Scrub-A-Dub-Dub

In an effort to not look like a greasy dirtbag all the time, I have washed my gear twice now since early summer. I was more than a little leery of throwing it directly in to the washing machine. The idea of destroying my super shiny reflector strips, ruining the seams and generally cocking up my jacket and pants didn’t really appeal to me. So, I opted for hand washing both times.

I filled up my bathtub with warm water and dropped a few scoops of Oxyclean in as it was filling. It created a bubbling roux for me to throw the gear in. I pulled out their liners and dropped my pants in, letting them soak for a few minutes.

With a little gentle rubbing with a soft sponge, the dirt disappeared. I tried to be mindful of avoiding the reflectors and any of the printed badging. I then left them soaking for about 10 minutes.

I let the water out of the tub, stretched the pants out and let the shower run to rinse them.  They were then hung up to drip dry.

So How Did They Come Out?

They look great! I’m super-happy with the results. There was no visible damage to the pants and they look nice and clean again. The Oxyclean even removed some small grease spots.

This was the first time I was excited about having done laundry. Ever.

Your Mileage May Vary

I have no idea if Oxyclean is bad for your garments. Use this process at your own risk. I’m simply reporting what I did and the results.

Astronaut Smashstronaut – I loves my Rev’it gear. To me, it’s the textile version of a Vanson jacket. With the Cayenne pants, I had no heated liners running and was completely comfortable in sub 30s temps – without even the slightest chill. Rev’it=great.

Congrats on the successful laundering. It’s rewarding when things work out the way we want.

Yup you completely just inspired me to clean my white Sidi boots and white leather jacket.

My Cayenne pants are black but the jacket is light grey/dark grey and I do have some spots on the lighter areas. Thanks for posting up your results.

I’ve tried loving my Cayenne get up but we just didn’t get along. Once the temperatures drop below 40°, I tend to reach for my FirstGear Rainier stuffs. Oh well, as with all things, YMMV.

How about a chance for more happiness? My current luggage set up can haul just about all my gear… ?

You’re just looking out for my happiness, huh, Soth? 😆

For some reason I didn’t think your cayenne suit was dark, Duc.

What are you using the clean your leather, GL?

      Thanks Ralph!

I’m going to use Lexol as it was recommended by CruJones. I tried some other cleaner I had laying around the house first but it didn’t do a good job.

Lexol makes a textile cleaner? I use the Lexol Cleaner (orange) and Conditioner (brown) for my leathers with good results.

Fuzz, who up there was doing the snow dance? :p

They actually DO make a Nasa-helmet. At least, X-lite does. (Nolan’s sports sub-brand) picture: http://2wheeltuesday.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/Jorge-Lorenzo-X-Lite-Moon-Man-Helmet.jpg

[…] and helmet have faded any. I’m also wondering if the stain fighting properties will make cleaning your gear a matter of a simple wipe down. We shall see, so stay tuned. 0 January 17th, 2011 | Tags: 303, Gil […]
