5 Things for the Snowed In Motorcyclist To Do

Snow Pine Tree on Long IslandHere on Long Island we just got another 16 inches of snow on top of what was leftover from the post Christmas blizzard. I think it’s going to be a little while before I can wheel my bike out of the garage and get out for a ride. I suspect many of you are in the same boat.

So, in the interest of making lemonade out of lemons – what is the snowed in motorcyclist to do with their free time? Here are my suggestions:

  1. Farkles
Have you been eying up some fancy doohickey that requires you to dismantle your bike for a little while? I dunno, maybe something like new wheels, wiring up some auxiliary lights or a dash shelf full of the things that go beep and have flashing lights and stuff? Go out in the garage. I’m sure your bike misses you.
  2. Detailing
I’ve heard that some people are obsessive about keeping their motorcycles clean and shiny. I’m pretty sure these people wear helmets to bed as well as on the bike. ::I kid, I kid!:: Maybe now would be a good time to get out there and do some furious Plexus-ing, de-tarring and whatever else it is people who keep their bikes looking neat as a pin do.
  3. Wishful Thinking
It’s never too soon to add more stuff to that motorcycle bucket list of yours. Need some inspiration? The ADVRider Ride Report forum is chock full of beautiful things to look at. There are also sites like MotorcycleRoads.com, RidetoEat.com and for the weirdos playing along at home – RoadsideAmerica.com.
  4. Watch the Tube – Long Way Round
Yea, yea, some people knock their efforts but I will forever be in the pro Ewan, Charlie and Claudio camp. No matter what anyone says I feel like those guys put in the miles and navigated those overloaded beasts over and through difficult terrain. They could’ve quit and went back to their cushy lives but they motored on. I’ve watched the series a dozen times at least and never get tired of it. Good stuff on a snowy day.
  5. Socialize!
If you’re anything like me, you have eleventy billion photos floating around that will most likely never see the light of day. Get to work on posting some of those dusty pictures and their stories on your blog! And then come back and let us know where we can get a look at your handywork.

Twitter is a great way to see what is going on in the motorcycle world. It’s real-time social exchanges with other motorcycle lovers while you’re sitting in your pajamas and fuzzy slippers. You’ve got everyone from print mags, to online news outlets like Hell for Leather, to the average Jane talking about bikes all the time.

One Last Tip: Don’t eat the yellow snow. You’re welcome.

Are you snowed in?

What do you do to while away the no-moto hours?

Why yes, I AM snowed in, but it doesn’t really matter to me this point. For one, I’m deep into farkling & planning my westward adventure. For two, I’m still pedaling and the act of pedaling is keeping me pretty happy, snow or no snow 🙂

No snow here in my part of the world (australia) but we have had seriously major flooding! Thankfully where I am our town only cutoff from the outside world – not completely washed away like some others.

Gotta love Love Way Round. I’ve seen it plenty of times too – also love Long Way Down.

    Love your blog.
    cheers!

Hi Anthony – Welcome aboard & Thanks!
We’ve been watching coverage of the flooding on the news. It’s just terrible. I’m glad you’re safe and sound.

@Soth – I’m so curious to see how you are going to mound your command module 🙂

@Duc – Do you like LWR or LWD better?

@GL – Saw your new tail on FB – Swanky!

Long Way Round is a great way to the pass the time. I have been working slowly on my bike getting it together for the season. Track fairing fitting/sanding/painting, some fluid changes, gear cleaning, I might even get my rear brake working before summer comes. I also just ordered a really nice piece that I can not WAIT to get in!!

The new tail isn’t even the best part, on friday a certain piece of swedish gold should be at my door step 😀

In case you don’t want to watch Long Way Round and Long Way Down, there is always Lois Pryce – her two books are a must-read, and if that is not enough, then buy Overland Journal since she publishes in there, too. Her last report was about riding a Ural ;). Entertainment combined with knowledge.

Fuzzy, I was so tired of the snow that I took off for the Caribbean on the 1st and returned last week on the 11th only to see more snow that night 🙁
We had started planning for this trip early last year, a friend from high school in South Africa came over with his family on December 27th, I spend the 29th and 30th in NY with them then on the 1st left on the Norwegian Gem cruise ship to the Caribbean, we hadn’t seen each other in 26 years, since college. Great time we had. Now I’m anticipating the NY bike show so I can see in person my new baby, the Yamaha Tenere 🙂

That sounds like you had another great trip to file away in your memory book, George. It’s nice that you could pick up right where you left off with your old friend.

What day will you be attending the motorcycle show?

The Tenere looks verrrry interesting. i’m looking forward to seeing that as well as the Tiger 800’s.

I’m snowed in big time, south of Boston. The garage side of my house casts a shadow across the bottom 40 feet of my driveway, which is cover in an inch thick ice sheet. So what do I do when I’m snowed in…
I read your blog, of course! -Sully
