Road Tripping: The Coffee Pot – Bedford, Pa

Road Tripping: The Coffee Pot – Bedford, Pa

There was a time when visiting the Bedford Coffee Pot was one of those things that just nagged and nagged me. Way over on the western half of Pennsylvania, it seemed lightyears away. In truth it is a mere 330 miles that for whatever reason may as well have been a million. Maybe it can be chalked up to some type of mental roadblock or… maybe sometimes the wishing for something is just as satisfying as the getting. Daydreams are perfect where life isn’t.

Then on winter Tuesday in 2009 I found myself at the coffee pot. Just like that. You wake up one day and finally just do whatever it is you want.

Then on a trip to Cleveland in December 2013 with my mom and daughter, we once again stopped at the Coffee Pot. Doing something once can make it a lot easier to do again. The roadblocks aren’t there anymore.

In July of 2015, I stopped by the Coffee Pot yet again. This time on my motorcycle. You know, just to check on things.

Nothing much had changed since the last time I visited. Considering the life that these roadside giants can endure, that was a good thing.

Well, Hello, Mr. Bedroom Eyes – Uniontown, Pa. Mufflerman

Well, Hello, Mr. Bedroom Eyes – Uniontown, Pa. Mufflerman

At first glance, you might think that the Uniontown, Pennsylvania muffler man is your run of the mill handsome Bunyan. But, upon closer inspection? Oh, no, he is not.

Check out the come hither eyelashes! ::hubba::hubba::

In a funny way, he looks more come at me, bro than some of the other muffler men. It’s probably just the sunlight glinting off of his buff forearm veins.

Road Tripping: World’s Largest Teapot – Chester, WV

Road Tripping: World’s Largest Teapot – Chester, WV

Tucked within the “stick” of West Virginia, that wee sliver of land between Pennsylvania and Ohio is the town of Chester. Why is this important? Well, pally – Chester is the home of the World’s Largest Teapot.

Now, I know what you’re thinking. You can’t believe you didn’t know this very important fact. Frankly, I’m surprised you didn’t either. I thought everyone knew that! 😉

When I pulled up next to the big teapot, wouldn’t you know it? It was under construction. Can you believe it? There it sat, dusty on my To Do List for all those years and I finally make it there and it’s being renovated.

Of course Im glad that it is being taken care of but without it’s label and handle in the picture how will you ever know it’s the World’s Largest? It could very well just be a really big or larger than your average teapot. ::sigh::

Road Tripping: A Fabulous Pennsylvania Roadside Animal Menagerie

Sometimes I will pull up a favorite in my GPS and follow it on a whim.

That isn’t to say that occasionally before I arrive at whatever place I’m going to that I don’t think to myself, “what the hell are you doing?

Shortly before ending up at Tim’s Secret Treasures in Charleroi, Pennsylvania I asked myself just that. But upon arrival I quickly remembered why I’d saved the place in my favorites to begin with.

I doubt anyone would argue – this should be my designated parking space! ::swoon::

Monkey needs a hug, don’t you think?

Sweet pink pig with sassy red hooves.

Giant Chicken Army in the hoooooooouse! A two-fer, no less. Apparently in 2014, one of Tim’s roosters was a victim of thievery, rustled away in the dark of night. (It wasn’t me, I swear!)

When it came time for me to press on, Oreo pig wouldn’t even look at me.

I know, Piggie. Don’t cry. I wish you could come home with me, too.

Anyone have any experience towing a pig behind a motorcycle?

Roadside Snaps: Mail Pouch Tobacco Barns and Signs

Roadside Snaps: Mail Pouch Tobacco Barns and Signs

The “favorites” list in my GPS is sprinkled with all sorts of places and things that I might stop at as I’m passing through an area. I often pull up the screen and just let it stay in view. When something in the list is a short distance away, I’ll navigate to it. One of the reoccurring themes in the waypoint list is Mail Pouch Tobacco signs and barns.

This wall ad was one of the points I’d saved in my GPS. Because I didn’t actually save a description of what the stop was, the title was something vague like : MP-12-1X, I knew it was Mail Pouch related, but didn’t know what I would find when I reached the point.

I’m glad I took the chance to see it, what a beauty. I don’t think I’ve seen one of their ads with the “Anit-Nervous Diyspeptic” [sic] line before.

While making my way across the Ohio River through the town of East Liverpool, the lady in the box directed me to swing down a not-so nice alley that spit me out on to Dresden Avenue.

The street had that look of a town that was long past its prime. Towns near railroad lines, rivers or other transportation centers and have brick building-lined streets are often good places to spot fading wall ads.

There seems to be some key to the town having been well-used around the turn of the 20th century. When you pull in to one, you just “know” that there will be an old, faded advertisement on some building, somewhere.

The lady in the box must’ve known something I didn’t because she deposited me by this faded Mail Pouch ad:

And just a few hundred yards, past that Mail Pouch fade, was this Bloch Brothers Mail Pouch ad. A nice bonus.

When you set out to find something specific, sure it is it’s own reward but stumbling across something unexpected is a bright spot in your day. That was the case with this Mail Pouch barn. Unfortunately, I don’t recall which town this barn was in but I know I found it after visiting the Madonna of the Trail in Beallsville, Pa. I *think* it was also along US 40.

Just southwest of Bedford, Pa – home of the Big Coffee Pot that I love so much, I had this barn’s coordinated tucked in to my favorites list.

Wouldn’t you know it? I found an open parking space in the town of Bedford directly across from this Bull Durham fade on the building at 116 W Pitt St. It’s just east of Dunkle’s Gulf.
