Everyone Should Sleep in a Castle at Least Once

Everyone Should Sleep in a Castle at Least Once

This weekend we decided to see how the other half lives and booked a room at Oheka Castle here on Long Island. This lovely grand home is still the owners private residence though it houses 30+ hotel rooms and suites.

Me? Sleeping in a castle? Crazy.

Sometimes I feel that I am out of my element in luxurious places or partaking in glamorous things. I’m convinced this idea of unworthiness is a residue of growing up in a low economic rung. One day someone will come bounding out of a broom closet shouting “imposter!” only to pull me out of view with a giant hook.

But, it hasn’t happened. Yet…

When we arrived on Friday afternoon, it was quite cold and the grounds were snowy but we still spent some time tromping around to get a look at the house. The best views of the home itself are taken in at a distance. You cannot understand the scale of everything when you’re up close.

Not such a bad place to lay your head for the evening.

While Kenny and I sat talking through dinner, we both felt very appreciative of how much our lives have changed for the better over the last 15 years. While we are both just as happy tramping around on our motorcycles and eating in gas stations, the opportunities for things like fluffy robes and sleeping in a castle aren’t too shabby.

Boxing Day Fatbike Riding in Calverton

Boxing Day Fatbike Riding in Calverton

Because we’re new to trail riding on our bicycles, Kenny and I have kind of decided to give each local trail a whirl. This past Friday, we brought our fatbikes to Calverton for the first time.

The main trail loop is about 8 miles and is mostly flat. There are a few single diamond loops off of the main trail that had a little climb and some logs to traverse that tack on another mile or so.

Overall the ride is generally flat and wiggly. A more aggressive mountain biker might think it was on the dull side but for me? It was a lot of fun. I’m just happy to be out enjoying the beautiful winter light on my bicycle.

The terrain was dry which was surprising considering how much rain we’d had over the last week. You couldn’t have asked for nicer weather in December here in New York. It was in low 50’s!

Apparently I must’ve knocked into the GoPro on my handlebars when we rode the Rollercoaster Loop. Lucky you, you get to seem my boobs. And my nostrils. Sexytime!

Big Ducks, Hot Jugs, Frozen Fingers and a Ural

When I got up and let the dog out this morning, it didn’t seem especially cold out. So, after having two cups o’ joe, I decided to suit up and ride over to the post office.

For some reason, the expression “haulin’ the mail” was stuck in my head all morning. I don’t know why that happens. It’s like you wake up with your brain in sponge-mode and it’s just dying for something to get lodged in there. You just never know what that something will be.

So with haulin’ the mail lyrically dancing through my mind over and over, going to get the actual mail seemed like as good a plan as any.

fuzzygalore christmas greeting

And wouldn’t you know it? One of my holiday greetings was a picture card of my friend riding at Deal’s Gap in the same way people send pictures of their kids – only not involving awful plaid outfits. Right on, ride on!

Since I was already out, I continued on to the big duck to pick up the ADVRider Tag-o-Rama tag. You know how much I love that silly duck. Unfortunately, I opted to wear my regular winter gloves versus my Gerbing gloves because I’m a moron. In the 60 mile round trip it hovered around 30 degrees and I had to pull over several times to let my frozen digits warm up next to the Ural’s big jugs. It’s just so dumb. I’ve got heated gloves, for cryin’ out loud!

Even though my fingers were aching from the cold, it felt great to be out. I’m on vacation until the New Year and it seemed like the perfect way to christen my time off.
