The Classic Auto Wash in Cromwell, CT is covered in a fiberglass menagerie of animals, dinosaurs and people. When we rode by the first thing that caught my eye though was the row of vintage gas pumps that stand front and center. They are really beautiful specimens.

Pumps from: Sinclair Gasoline H-C, Texaco – Fire Chief Gasoline, Sunoco Blue, Shell Gasoline

Ride to Eat: Five Diners along the New York and Connecticut Border

The interior of the West Taghkanic Diner in Ancram New YorkI recently discovered that within a 30 mile radius of where the states of Connecticut, New York and Massachusetts all come together, aside from some terrific riding on county routes, quiet backroads and alongside picturesque farms there are a handful of very charming American diners.  Though I did not have the opportunity to sample the food in all of them, their exteriors alone were enough to make me pull over on my route.

  • The Collins Diner
Located on Routes 44/7 in Canaan, Connecticut
    Closed when we passed by.
  • The Martindale Chief Diner
    Route 23  Craryville, New York
Their sign is a little beat up but still eye catching.
Real flowers on each table. That gets a thumbsup from me.
  • Diamond Street Diner
Though it looked a little worse for wear in comparison to the West Taghkanic and the Martindale Chief, it still provided an appealing facade. We did not enter this diner.

  • The Winsted Diner
The absolute tiniest diner of this group. Unfortunately it was closed but I just have to know what its like inside! I will be back~

Do you have a review of any of these diners? How about other suggestions for places to stop for some grub in there area? Comment below!

ROADSIDE KITSCH: Catching up with the Cheshire Connecticut Muffler Man

Valentine’s Day here in the northeast was an absolutely stunning day to be out and about. Our travels brought us to Connecticut, where we spent the afternoon and evening monkeying around. While we were in the neighborhood we stopped in to see the Cheshire Bunyan Muffler Man. The last time that I saw him, he was just pants and boots. He was apprently off getting his hair did. Now he is sporting a spiffy new coat of paint. I’m pretty sure I heard a chorus of angels as he came in to sight.

The Thimbles and Home Again

Saturday, July 12, 2008 12:00 am
July12

I feel like I haven’t been home in ages. As we arrived home from being away again, it really felt great to know that I don’t have to be anywhere for the forseeable future. Now, don’t get me wrong. I love to go places and see new things but every once in a while you just need to be home to recharge your batteries. And trim the hedges. Part of me felt a major wave of guilt for neglecting the house for so many weeks now. I’m fairly certain that we’ve got more weeds than flowers at this point.

Saturday we spent part of the day in Stony Creek, Connecticut. We took a nice hour long boat tour of the Thimble Islands.

I so wish I had the balls to move away from here. To move to a place where people say ‘Hello, how are you?’ and actually give a crap what you answer in response. To a place that is small and neighborly, to a place that has Barn Dances… Someday.

As we were leaving lovely, little Stony Creek, I saw something out of the corner of my eye that made me double back for a closer look. As I pulled into the lot and feasted my eyes upon this curious beast, I hear off to my right the sound of Kenny’s voice, calm but firm…

‘No.
No, no, no.
We do not need a boatmobile.
No.’

You know something, dear boy? We just might need a boatmobile. We do live on an island after all. Global warming, world gone asunder, terrorism and all that. We very well could need a boatmobile and you know what? We’ll have you to thank when we’re stuck in 78 bajillion hours of traffic trying to get off of this island in our dumb car. Won’t you be sorry then?

F-f-f-froze my fingers numb and headed off to Marcus Dairy for morning coffee. IPOD humming.. fingers throbbing.. still.. smiling.
