AMA: If you had to pick a song or songs to sum up your life philosophy, what would you choose?

Q: If you had to pick a song or songs to sum up your life philosophy, what would you choose?

No kidding, I’ve thought about this question since it came in a few months ago. I keep running in to a brick wall mostly because I’ve realized that I don’t definitively know what my life’s philosophy is.

There are things I’ve come to understand about myself or ways in which I now believe in behaving as a result of being terribly mean to people in my past. I don’t take any pleasure in saying that I have been ruthlessly cruel when handling other people’s hearts. It isn’t something I am proud of. And so, I suppose you could say that continually I try to move towards redemption as I proceed forward in my life.

Each day I have varying degrees of success and failure in attempting to find forgiveness, to be honest and to practice kindness. In the course of my internal work, I wrestle with shame, guilt, depression and destructive self pity. Though I may sometimes come up short on the good things I want for myself, still I move forward towards the light hopefully.

Perhaps you might find a common thread that I don’t consciously see in some of my most played earworms:

  1. No Halo – Sorority Noise
  2. Hello, I’m in Delaware – City and Colour
  3. Blood in the Cut – K. Flay
  4. 22, a Million (full album)- Bon Iver
  5. Bloodbuzz Ohio – The National
  6. Birds – Kate Nash
  7. No One’s Gonna Love You – Band of Horses
  8. Anyone who knows what love is – Irma Thomas
  9. Buried Myself Alive – The Used
  10. Anomaly – Angels and Airwaves

This post is in response to an: Ask Me Anything question.

Musical preference is not something we have in common. I don’t recognize any of those songs or even the band names.

Oh well, you can’t be right about everything.

      😆 I suppose not 🙂

How about you – do you think you could answer the question? I found it really challenging.

I’ve never heard this song before. At first I couldn’t tell if he was being facetious. Interesting lyrics. I love it when people can zero in and say the things we think but dont usually say out loud.

We are not the worst things we’ve done. Human life is hard; eggs get broken. It saddens me to hear how rough you are on yourself. Ease up and cut yourself some slack, remembering that, at the same time, hordes of friends admire you for the many good deeds you do. Plus, we can’t change the past but can create the future, so direct your energies there.

    BIG HUG!!

I thought about this in the past and the best song that comes to mind for me is Treetop Flyer which is a Dteven Stills song covered by Jimmy Buffett on his album Banana Wind

Wow that’s a depressing playlist. It never fails to amaze me that other people also beat the hell out of themselves for absolutely no good reason. All we are is dust in the wind…

Interesting post. I read this the other day and started to type a comment but after a page and half I realized I was talkin to myself. I’ve not really considered my life’s philosophy before. I appreciate the honesty in your posts, they get me thinkin…thanks.

It’s funny how things fall together sometimes. One day I’m reading an old post on a motorcycle blog, the next I’m considering my life’s philosophy and literally typing the words “I wore a mask at work for a long time”. Today on day three I took an early morning ride for coffee and found a linocut print on the coffee shop wall entitled “Metaphorically Speaking” that featured a portrait of a man wearing a spiky haired tribal mask. Inscribed within the background of the image were the words “We all wear masks”. That is freaky…

I’m more a melody guy than a lyric guy so my ear-worms tend to relate more than sum up. I’m working on the sum up part though.

Just some stuff I’m listening to recently and one artist we agree on:
01- Bon Iver – The Wolves (Act I and II)
02- Chris Rea – On the Beach
    03- alt-J – Tesselate
04- Jason Isbell – Live Oak
05- Damon Albarn – Lonely Press Play
06- Sufjan Stevens – Night Zombies
    07- Lucky Peterson – Who’s been talkin?
08- Jacob Dylan – Will It Grow
    09- Middle Brother – Portland
    10- Ed Sheeran – The “X” Album
11- Get Set Go – I Hate Everyone ( Only Kidding! 🙂 This is funny)

      Hey BP-
It is funny indeed. That would’ve been one of those times that I would’ve thought the universe was talking to me. We see what we want to, right? Sometimes though you’ve got to admit the timing of these thoughts and experiences is uncanny. ::puts on tinfoil hat::

Talking to yourself – that’s what i feel like i’m doing all the time here. Working my own shit out while other people are looking.

Thanks for sharing your experience. Lots of familiar names on your list. Gonna take a listen to them 🙂
