The Grasshopper, Scorpion, and Serpent Who Stole My Heart
Borrego Springs – December 2016
Two days after Christmas in 2016, I set off for California to take a solo motorcycle trip. In hindsight, I can’t say if I was looking to find or lose myself. One thing is for sure, the trip opened my eyes and heart to feelings I’d buried. It softened me and allowed me to feel vulnerable in a way I hadn’t before. These photos were taken on one of my favorite days of the trip, the day I went to Borrego Springs.
Riding my motorcycle down from the mountains along Montezuma Valley road treated me to spectacular views of the desert valley. I was on my way to Borrego Springs to visit Galetta Meadows. There are huge metal sculptures that live among the sand and scrub there.
Face to Face With the Most Beautiful Serpent
Though there are over 100 different sculptures scattered around Borrego Spring, the giant serpent drew me to Galetta Meadows.
It’s rusting, scaly body undulates hundreds of feet through an ocean of sand. It is both ferocious and beautiful.
Scorpions and Grasshoppers
There were dinosaurs, elephants, camels, and other snuggly-type creatures, but the giant scorpion rocked my world. Seeing my motorcycle parked in the distance gives you some sense of the scorpion’s scale.
Something about its size, the way it sat menacingly low and ready to strike really captured my heart.
I’m not sure if me liking the creepy crawlies best says something about me.
The hapless grasshopper face to face with a scorpion. We’ve all been there, and probably on both sides.
The spikey leg hairs on the grasshopper are awesome. They’re kind of like some ladies’ legs in the winter. Or…so I’ve heard. 😉
My Lucky Day
I found two liberty dollars in the sand by the scorpion. It was my lucky day. My lucky day indeed.
Wow. Just wow. These are amazing, especially in that environment. The scorpion is my totem-animal so I gravitate toward that.
“A Fist Full of Dollars”!!!
My favorite is the Camels
Very cool! I saw that a couple of years ago when Triumph used it for their publicity shots for the new Thunderbirds but I had no idea where it was … you just added yet another place to my “must see before I die” list! 🙂
BTW: Nice hands … were you out working the fields before you found those coins? 😉
Another place to add to the must-see list! That serpent is just fabulous! 🙂
I loved the grasshopper with it’s accurate hairy legs. What a cool place and $2 found? Life is good.
VERY cool!
Grasshopper legs. Never thought of that particular comparison.
Wow!! You are amazing. You always find the coolest places!! ❤
Those are really, really fantastic! What a great place to adventure ride to!
Hope all is well – haven’t seen a new post in too long!
