I Wonder If It Tastes Like Gasoline?

After lending our neighbors our snowblower, this bottle of wine showed up at our door as a thank you. That was very nice of them. Gee, I wonder what made them pick this for us?

Neither Kenny nor I drink wine so we don’t have any idea if it’s “good.” But the label is sweet.

  1. Damn. If only each of us could be cursed with such neighbors. The question is, did they return the snowblower?

    In that little bottle, you just might have the beginnings of a weekend snow- and ice-melter: First, invite over a couple of friends (great conversationalists is a must). Next, for dinner, toss some penne pasta with a mix of grilled chicken, mild Italian sausage, and sliced green, red, and yellow bell peppers. Top that toss with chunky marinara, grated fresh parmesan, and ground pepper medley. Enjoy dinner with your favorite beer, of course… Oh, and ask your friends to contribute a crusty, artisan bread–maybe sourdough. Finally, for dessert: slightly warmed chocolate croissants a la mode (croissants and vanilla bean ice cream also provided by the friends–damn, it pays to have such friends), and…

    Mulled Wine

    One bottle of red wine (Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, Merlot, etc.)
    One peeled and sliced orange (keep peel to add zest to taste into cooking pot)
    ΒΌ cup of brandy
    8-10 cloves
    2/3 cup of honey or sugar
    3 cinnamon sticks
    1 tsp fresh or 2 tsp ground ginger

    Combine all ingredients in a large pot or a slow cooker, and gently warm the blend on low to medium heat for 20-25 minutes (avoid boiling), stirring occasionally to ensure that the honey or sugar fully dissolves. When the wine is steaming and the ingredients have been well-blended, it is ready to serve. Ladle the mulled wine into mugs, leaving seasonings behind, and enjoy!

    Now, for my dinner tonight… Oven-warmed corndogs with mustard aplenty and a glass or two of Bota Box Old Vine Zinfandel. The Zin’s not bad, but somehow the corndogs just don’t measure up.
