Did I Ever Tell You About That Time I Went To The Roof Of The World?

The Aiguille du Mdi in Chamonix, France was a once in a lifetime experience. Teetering at the tip of a mountain peak at over 12,000ft up, it was about as much as my wimpy little heart could handle.

From the moment I stepped into the cable car and we began our first stage of the ascent my legs felt like jelly. Even so, it was something I knew that I had to experience. I stood in the gondola looking at the floor, too scared to look out at the ground fading away.

When we stepped out of the tram and onto the first platform, I remember asking Kenny if he felt the mountain swaying too. Of course he didn’t. I think I was about to start hyperventilating. But up we went in the elevator to the upper most viewing level and out into the sunshine.

Taking in the view from the roof of the world was worth being scared.

Wow! What an awesome experience! Your photos are absolutely stunning! Thank you for sharing your experiences, I always enjoy reading your blog. The description of your experience in the gondola made me chuckle because it reminded me of an experience I had years ago (on a much smaller scale) when I learned I am quite unnerved by heights. Who knew?!

Often when reading your entries, I find myself transported to another time or place in my own life … experiences that are pale by comparison, but none-the-less are memories of a lifetime … memories tucked away for safekeeping and long since forgotten. Thank you!

      Thank you, Martha-
I highly doubt that your experiences pale. Maybe you just need to stop and REALLY see how wonderful they are 🙂 Sometimes we’re unable to see the greatness of our own experiences. Grass is always greener and all that.

Oh sure, the roof of the world, but did you bother to patch the leak while you were up there? Heck, the least you coulda’ done was holler up to the carpenter’s son and tell him that there’s a whole lot that needs fixin’ down here. 😉

Obviously, a spectacular time was had by all. It seems that being brave usually pays off, a lesson we all could learn, and re-learn, often.

And the pic of the lone hiker on the snowy ridge… Too cool.

Sorry, ‘dog. I just wasn’t thinkin’ beyond not hyperventilating up there 😀

Bravery… someday I hope to have some. In the meantime I’ll make do with fits of blind stupidity.

Beautiful photos! I used to dream of climbing in the Alps. Not so much anymore…

  4. These pictures are lovely. When I see images like this I think of three things:

    1. My mother. She was German and grew up in the Alps which I had a chance to visit scenes like this many times as a child.

    2. Chicken noodle soup. The hungriest I’ve ever been was around age 9 and my mother and I had been walking in the mountains all day (or so I remember). I was so hungry. We came to a little inn which dotted the trails high up in the mountains and they served me a hot bowl of soup. I can still taste it.

    3. Soaring. Like Julie Andrews at the beginning of the sound of music my spirits soar in the mountains. It’s been 23 years since I’ve walked in the Alps. I need to go back I think.

Your pictures and experiences there seem magical.
