Listening to Lois – Where Are You Going?

Listening to Lois – Where Are You Going?

Lois Pryce Speaking at NYC Motorcycle Show

While at the motorcycle show in New York, I sat and listened to motorcycle adventuress Lois Pryce’s presentation of her trip from Alaska to Argentina. It was a life changing endeavor that spawned the book Lois on the Loose.

Watching her move across the stage, a lady in a dress – feminine, funny, seemingly happy – she talked about her love of travel and riding her motorcycle.

Seeing her in person moved me. There she was, a ‘regular’ person who didn’t have to choose between being a lady OR being a motorcyclist. She was both. And that was wonderful.

Following her on-stage talk, Kenny and I made our way over to her booth to purchase one of her books. After a quick, hello she fired off a question:

β€˜Where are you going on your next adventure?’

Oh, Lois… you just don’t know how that question has been burning away inside of me lately! I am consumed by it. My thoughts have been a constant swirl of wonder, and calculating, and trying to retain a balance between following my selfish heart and honoring my commitments, too.

What to do, what to do?

I guess now is not the time for me to know, not the time for me to make any final decisions.

So, with no answers for myself ~ how about you? Where are you going on your next adventure?

  1. Next adventure? Might do the Midnight Run on my 1965 Honda 305 Scrambler. And maybe this year someone else can say they’ve done it in a sidecar with their daughter navigating. Hint, Hint.. :>0

    1. I’ll be looking forward to seeing what you turn up on!

Did you know that Nathan’s has been torn down? I know there is a Dunkin Donuts across the street. That ought be a good spot to warm up and get the route sheet stuff together before take off.

I just keep thinking about how bad the ride home sucks in the morning. Being able to get home as fast as possible is a plus. Can’t do that in the Ural. I don’t think I have the constitution for that right now. I’m pretty sure I’m taking the Tiger.

      1. Nathan’s torn down? Holy crap! First Marcus Dairy, now Nathans. All my haunts from my youth!

Seeing as I come down from NH for the Midnight Run, I always trailer down on my flatbed with a ramp gate, including when I take my sidecar, so I totally understand what you’re saying. See you there.

  2. While it may not be a time for you to make a decision, it *is* a time for you to ponder and think and plan and consider, all of which lay the groundwork for later action. Plus, daydreaming is fun!

Lois sounds so cool. I love people who can manage multiple social-identities that others have trouble merging in their minds. Yes, one can be a feminine lady and a rugged motorcyclist and an adventurous explorer. One does not exclude another. Great post, buddy.

  3. Thanks for sharing. I’ll have to check out her book. My next adventure is the Color Run 5K in July. I consider it an adventure because I’ve never run/jog or the like in my life. Not sure what got into my head at this age (mathematically closer to 60 than 50) to decide it was high time to try! Yikes.

  4. So cool that you got to listen to and meet Lois.

I loved her book Lois on the Loose!! To do what she did and then write about it with such humor is awesome.

So when do you write your first book? You know we’d read it.

  5. That’s one of those books that I’ve started but haven’t gotten too far into. I keep forgetting to bring it with me on trips as that is about the only time I get to read. Looking forward to your book as well…

My next adventure appears to be a 650km snow machine trip in the Arctic this coming April. I probably need to start getting ready.
