Surrendering to the Weeds: The Roseland Ranch in Dutchess County, NY

Saturday was absolutely spectacular weather-wise. All throughout the day I found myself debating whether or not I should close the vents on my jacket. At speed the air was quite cool and seemed very un-August-y. Given that I am not a fan of the heat, I found it absolutely delicious. Taking advantage of our windfall of a free Saturday and the very spring-like weather, Kenny and I left Long Island heading towards Orange, Dutchess and Columbia counties in New York where we spent the day riding quiet backroads that we had pretty much to ourselves.

As I cruised along Hunns Lake Rd near Bangall, NY I saw the sign for the Roseland Ranch approaching on the right. Sometimes a sign just speaks to you and you have to go in for a closer look. When we doubled back to grab a quick photo I found it sad to see that the resort that was attached to such a great sign was in a very sorry state of disrepair. Though I do not know anything about the resort or its history, the property gave off a vibe like it was surrendering to the clutches of the weeds around it. No doubt many laughing children and happy families spent time in this now deserted place. Chalk another one up to fading Americana.

I understand that feeling of a loss! There is a place near here, where my wife spent many summers as a child and now it has grown up in weeds. Back in the day, her parents danced under a cabana to the likes of a young Tommy Dorsey and other bands before they made it big. When they speak of that place their eyes sparkle. Very sad! Sometimes change isn’t all that great, at least IMO.

What a sweet memory that must be for them.

Yes, not all change is good. But as I think about it, maybe in some regard because things are fleeting, it keeps them in a special place in your heart.
