Signs, Signs…
‘You know, lotsa people stop to take pictures of that sign.’
‘It really is a lovely, old sign.’
‘Yea, I guess it is. Thank you.’
No, no, ma’am. Thank you for holding on to a piece of fading Americana.

I used to have a stepladder JUST like that :'(
Bless their hearts for holding on to it!
We used to stop at that place for gas every weekend in the early 70’s. It was called “Ethel’s”, and run by a 90-something year old woman. Her husband had died years earlier, and she kept the place going as a single pump station. Pumped the gas, too.
It was one of those places that looked deserted when you pulled in, but eventually Ethel would meander out. I’m pretty sure my dad was just checking on her, as there was no way we needed gas after about 15 miles, every Sunday.
This picture made me think of Michael Franks’ song “Doctor Sax”
